LONDON, E. c. 26th Oct. 1916.
At the last meeting of the Committee of this Association
attention was called to the delay in winding up Enemy firms which
have been in liquidation under the Hongkong Government, and reference
was also made to recent proceedings in the Legislative Council in
connection with the renewal under instructions from the Government
of the registration of Trade Marks belonging to these Snemy firme.
My Committee desire me to ask if there are any special
reasons why liquidation should not be finally concluded in the near
future, seeing that over two years have already been spent in the
process of winding up?
As regards the renewal of registration of the Enemy Trade
Marks, it would appear that any value which may attach to the regis-
tration of these marks has been preserved by the action of the Hong-
kong Government at a time when the owners were not in a position to
secure this advantage for themselves.
As this procedure has given rise to unfavourable comment
both in this country and in the Far East my Committee would be glad
to know if the Trade Marks in question are now under the control of
the Hongkong Government and whether registration has been preserved
for the benefit of Enemy subjects after the war, or for some other
reason?
I have the honour to be,
H.M.Under Secretary of State
for the Colonies,
Sir
Your most obedient servant
Colonial Office,
Downing Street,
8. Anderson,
Chairman.
