t
Sir,
With reference to your letter (No.35125) of the 9th August respecting the procedure adopted by Mr. Williams, the Hong Kong Correspondent of the Commercial Intelligence
Branch, in furnishing applicants with information concerning exports from that Colony, I am directed by the Board of Trade
to state, for Mr. Bonar Law's information, that they have no
desire to control any correspondence concerning Chinese
products into which Mr. Williams may enter in his capacity
of secretary to the local Chamber of Commerce, provided that Such correspondence is not conducted on official note paper,
and that no reference is made by him or by the enquirers
to his position as Imperial Trade Correspondent. They would however, much appreciate it if Mr. Williams could favour
the Commercial Intelligence Branch with copies of any replies
which he may send in his capacity of Secretary to the
Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce.
As regards replies sent by Mr. Williams in his capacity
of Imperial Trade Correspondent, the Board regret that they
are unable to sanction any departure from the procedure sat
forth in paragraph 5 of their instructions to the Trade
Correspondents generally.
Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office.
have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Clipward
