As to the question on 49849 I think the
proposed answer is the right one though the Colonial
Secretary's statement gives the number of renewals as
133, not 100, and the figure is rather staggering.
1 agree, however, that the replies should both have Board of Trade concurrence, and in apply-
ing for this we should send the Board a copy of
16796 and tell them that we approved the Governor's
suggestion. These do not seem to have been sent to
tnem oefore.
I may add that i have been discussing this
matter with the Chairman of the China Association and
hoped to divert the agitation in this way. However
this question has forestalled me. I am expecting another visit from the Chairman daily.
