1th reference to your desratch No.45 of this Series of the 11th instant, I have the honour to report that I have spoken to the ecretary-General of the Italian Foreign Office again on the subject of bignor "olpicelli, the Italian Consul-
-General at Canton.
Signor di Martino said that when I spoke to him on a previous occasion regarding the conduct of this official, his recall had been under consid- eration. He said however confidentially that he
was the brother-in-law of an influential deputy, whose name he mentioned and whom I recognise as one of the Germanophile arty in Italian politics, and this deputy had made a strong plea for his conduct being overlooked. The matter which I had nor submitted to him was of a character too grave to be overlooked again, and he asked for a brief Note of some of the astonishing passages in bignor Volpicelli's correspondence which I have
given him.
I have the honour to be with the highest respect,
Lir.
e Right Honble,
Your most obedient,
Dir . Grey Bart., .G., 1.P..
humble servant,
