With reference to Your Excellency's letter No. 145

of the 9th instant and my reply of the 16th, No. 163, I have the honour to state that Mr. Volpicelli informed me in conversation yesterday that he intended to troənsfer the Italian Consulate-General from Hongkong to Canton as he

considered that Italian interests at the letter place were ( more importance than at Hongkong. He has not succeeded in renting prend ses in the native city and informed me that

he had not yet been able to make arrangements for a res-

idence. I hear it said that he has been offered premises

by the Berlin Mission at Pati on the opposite side of the

river to Shameen.
