I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of
your letter of the 5th instant, No 36130/16, transmitting
for
a copy of correspondence with the Goverment of Hong Kong
on the subject of the securities held against note issues
in that Colony.
2. With regard to His Excellency The Governor's
request that the quarterly returns should be furnished
as early as possicle, I have to state that this is already
done, and in this connection I enclose for your information
a copy of correspondence which we had with the Colonial
Government on the same subject in 1912.

As to the suggestion that we should send quarterly
detailed statements of the nature of the securities
furnished by each Bank, I would point out that any tran-
sactions which take place in connection with the deposit
of securities against note issues are shown in the accounts
which we send to the Colonial Government immediately after
the close of each month
There would appear, therefore,

to be no difficulty in arranging for the preparation locally
of any quarterly statements that may be required soon after
the end of each quarter.
4. It does not seem to be clearly understood that
the audited quarterly returns are forwarded to the Colonial
