With reference to your letter of the 5th instant, No.40459, enclosing a copy of a telegram from the Governor of Hong Kong relative to an application from Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Company, that they may be allowed to retain the services of Captain Knight, Master of the s.s. "Loongsang", whose father was a German subject, I am dommanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you, for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that confidential instructions can only be given to British subjects born of British parents and that in Their Lordships opinion no exception should be made in the case of Captain Knight.
