REC. REG FEL 16
With reference to your letter of 20th September, 41920, covering an extract from a letter from Ir. T. Brown
containing allegations as to the treatment of soldiers on
board the Transport "MANITOU", I am commanded by y La ds
Commissioners of the Admiralty to enclose herewith, for
the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies
copies of correspondence received from the owners which
are self-explanatory and to state that my Lords concur in
the views expressed therein.
There
With regard to the accommodation provided I an to state that Troops are always put below the horses in
preference to above, for obvious sanitary reasons,
are in nearly all troop ships insufficient hemmock billets
for the full number carried and some of the men have to
sleep on mess tables or on the deck, but there is no hard-
ship in this, as expert opinion has proved.
My Lords regret that such complaints unsupported
by evidence should have been put forward and will be glad
to learn that the writer of the letter has the facts brought
to his knowledge and has been requested to withdraw his
random statements.
Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office,
LP-No. 8.
S.I.
I am,
Sir,
'Your obedient Servant,
Whakamfree
