Clementi, C.M.G., Mr. Loke Yew, and Mr. Cheung Yin Hin but these gentlemen were unfortunately unable to attend; it is however hoped that they may be able to do so at some future date. In addition to the above it had been hoped to confer an honorary degree on one of the largest benefactors of the University Mr. Cheung Pat Sze but that gentleman died in September. Cheung Yin-hin his partner in business was there- -fore substituted for him.

I may mention that in connection with the celebration there were various social entertainments the Vice-Chancellor Sir Charles Eliot giving a luncheon party and dinner party on the 13th. and Dr. Jordan the Pro Vice-Chancel- -lor a large luncheon party at the Hongkong Hotel on the14th. while I myself entertained the Governor of Kuangtung the honorary graduates, the professors and some of the ordinary graduates at dinner after the ceremony when complimentary speeches were exchanged.

In conclusion I may say that I consider the ceremony was dignified and well carried out and with the encouragement of the message from the President, the attend- -ance of the Civil Governor of Kuangtung and the enrolment of the six honorary graduates calculated to enhance the reputa- -tion and prosperity of the University.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

Horn

Governor,&c..
