Referring to Mr. Bonar Law's Despatch No. 88 of

the 31st. March, 1916, and previous correspondence regarding the appointments of Mr. Wakeman to be Crow Solicitor and Mr. Jacks to be Land Officer, I have the honour to report that the latter officer has, since the 29th. May last, carried on unaided the considerable work of the Land Office, working much overtime.

I have accordingly to recommend that Mr. Jacka should be grated a bonus at the rate of £150 a month for the period 29th. May to 31st. December. I may refer in this connection to my Despatch No. 123 of the 12th. April, 1913, and subsequent 15085

correspondence regarding a bonus paid in similar circumstances on a previous occasion,

I asked in my telegram of the 8th, March,1916, gov

for the appointment of an Assistant Land Officer, and Mr. Bonar S2292 Law, in his telegram of the 8th. November suggested the appointment

of an Assistant Crom Solicitor from England. Then either of these arrive in the Colony it should be possible to relieve Mr. Jacks of a considerable part of his present work. Pending the arrival of one or other of these officers I would ask discretionary power to continue the payment to Mr. Jacks of bonus at the rate of $150 a month.
