Sir,

I

[REGS || DEC 16 Hongkong, 2nd July, 1913.

I am requested by the Sisters to lay before you for transmission to His Excellency certain arguments which they hope will induce His Excellency to increase the staff by the addition of two extra sisters,

1.

-

The sudden illness of a Sister as at present - upsets the mursing very much and necessitates the afternoon Sister (2 to 10 p.m.) doing both flats in A Block, the Operatin Theatre, if any surgery case comes in, and the Maternity lospita - a very heavy amount of work especially in the hot weather.

With the four veers scheme of leave it has so far been necessary to have two Sisters in England at the same time, i... we are two short.

2.

3.

We have taken over the medical care of all women and children in the Garrison and their number seems to be on theil increase. Whilst this has added to the revenue no increase of staff has been made.

4.

The extension to the Maternity, which was neces- sary to cope with the work, has been finished but without any increase in staff. This work is increasing steadily and is likely to do so. In 1902 there were 67 cases admitted and in 1912 144, and up to 30th June of this year 96 cases so that the figures for 1913 are likely to be higher than ever.

5.

Very shortly the new Operating Theatre will be opened and the old theatre turned into a private ward Thich will add to the work of the Sister of the top floor.

6.

I need scarcely say that the idea of any short leave has to be abandoned nor have we any margin in the event

of any one going sick.

The Principal Civil Medical Officer,

7.

Hongkong.
