War Office enquire whether Government of Hongkong could lend services of men belonging to the Harbour Department to man river transport craft Mesopotamia. Numbers at present required are 8 boatswains,24 quartermaster,8 ships carpenters,96 deckhands,6 cance boys,8 headmen,8 engine drivers 1st class,16 engine drivers 2nd class,8 engineer storekeepers,16 greasers,64 stokers. Men would be enlisted in Royal Engineers duration of war or less if no longer required non-combatant service rates of pay boatswaine, ships carpenters,1st class drivers £4.10s per month with rank of Sergeant,Quartermaster,headman, 2nd class drivers, engineer, store- keepers,2 greasers and 8 stokers £3.10s per month with rank of Corporal, 14 greasers,56 stokers £2.10s per month with rank of 2nd Corporal, deckhands and canoe boys £2 per month Privates. Uniform rations quarters free, 2/3 pay will be deferred and payable on discharge, gratuities for disablement or death will be given, all expenditure will be borne by His Majesty's Government. Report by telegraph how many of each class you could spare and whether any of the men would be Europeans.
