GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG.

22nd September,

1916.

Sir,

Pinions

Referring to my Despatch No. 334 of the 24th

August, I have the honour to state that on the 19th August the Principal Civil Medical Officer and the Government Bacteriologist proceeded to Macao, by arrangement with the Macao Authorities, to investigate the causes and the extent of the outbreak of

cholera.

2.

These officere reported that, although the deaths

from intestinal diseases had been much above the average, the

reports as to the prevalence of cholera were exaggerated, and the disease had at the time of their visit almost disappeared.

3.

The proclamation putting into operation Ordinance No. 3 of 1895 was accordingly rescinded on the 1st September, and a week later all quarantine restrictions were withdrawn. There were in all ten cases of cholera in Hongkong, the last oc-

-curring on the 1st September.

4.

Copies of reports made by the Government Bac- -teriologist on certain well water and infected material brought from Macao have been forwarded to the Macao Authorities.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient, humble servant,

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

ANDREW BONAR LAW, M.P.,
