With reference to my Despatch No. 111 of the 3rd

of April, 1914, I have the honour to transmit for your inform- -ation the enclosed newspaper account of the opening of the Helena May Institute for Women.

The cost of the building, the laying out of a garden adjoining it and the furnishing of the rooms have far exceeded the original estimate and you will observe that the total cost of these three items has amounted to no less than 893,000 while 15,250 has been subscribed to an endowment fund.

The cost of the building has been borne by 4 donors i.e. Mr. Ellis Kadoorie who gave 862,000, Mr. Ho Kom-tong who gave $25,000 and Mr. Lau Chü-pak and Mr. Chan Kai-ming who gave £3,000 each.

Towards the endowment fund Sir R. Ho Tung, Mr.

Lau Chü-pak and Mr. Ho Kom-tong gave 82,000 each.

Only Europeen and Eurasian women, and girls over 14 years of age, are eligible for membership.
