cannot be given confidential documents.

therefore requested to replace him by a master of British birth". message ends.

Captain Knight was born of a German father

He was educa-

ted in Germany from seven years old till seventeen.

After that he has been for 23 years in the British

mercantile marine and in the service of the Indo- China Steam Navigation Company for 15 years. His parents are now dead. His nephew, Y. SCHENK, joined the Royal Navy as a signalman in 1914.

His brother of same name, was interned for 12

months in Ruhleben and released broken down in

health. Another brother named Arthur SCHENK is

in the London Rifle Brigade and was wounded in France. Captain Knight has promised to support

the latter's wife and two children. If he is

now dismissed he cannot find any other employment.
