Gov/357/04.5
I have the honour to confimm my cypher telegram
of the 28th instant summarising information conveyed to the
Colonial Secretary by the Consul-General for Japan, regarding the despatch of the Japanese Gunboat "Saga" to Canton, and to transmit the enclosed copy of a note which Mr. Severn took of his conversation with Mr. Takahashi.
2.
With reference to the 2nd paragraph of that note
I enclose copy of a letter from His Britannic Majesty's Consul- General at Canton covering copy of the telegram which he sent
to Sham Tsen-huen (Cantonese transliteration of Tsen Chun-hsuan).
As far as this Colony is concerned the publication
of this telegram in the Native Press who copied it from the
Canton Press and in the English Press to whom I caused the tele-
-gram to be communicated, had a most reassuring and beneficent
effect.
3.
I have sent copy of this despatch to His Britannic
Majesty's Minister at Peking and to His Britannic Majesty's
Consul-General at Canton.

I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient, humble servant,
Amag
