It is impossible to forecast what the result of the hostilities which have arisen will be. In the meantime at the request of Mr. Jamieson for dispositions to protect the Shamien in case of necessity, the General Officer Commanding has obtained the sanction of the War Office to despatch at a moment's notice 200 men of the Shropshire Regiment to support Mr. Jamieson in the protection of British lives and property, while the Rear-Admiral is prepared to despatch a destroyer and

a torpedo boat for the same purpose.

Sham and Li are acting according to my inform- -ation and that of Mr. Jamieson with the connivance and assist-

-ance of Japanese. As far as this Colony is concerned the result is that trade with the Province which had shewn a flicker of revival some weeks ago is now again absolutely dead.
