REC
REGE 25 JULIF
GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG.
15th June, 1916.
I have the honour to transmit for your considera- -tion the enclosed copy of an application addressed to the Head of the Sanitary Department by 5 married Sanitary Inspectors of the 2nd class (£165 £225 by £15 biennially, with free quarters) asking that the minimum of their scale of salary be raised to £200 per annum, together with a statement by one of the Petition- -ers - Mr. R. R. Wood of his expenses for the month of March last. The expenditure shown is reasonable.
2.
All these officers, except Mr. Wood, are in the occupation of free quarters. No quarters being yet available for Mr. Wood he is obliged to rent quarters for which he is allowed only $30 a month. He has, however, to pay 850 a month.
3.
In these circumstances I desire to recommend that
a married officer, entitled to free quarters, who is living with his wife or family in the Colony in rented quarters, be allowed 845 per mengem for such quarters as from the 1st of January, 1916. I may mention that in the case of married Prison Warders who are allowed to live outside the quarters provided by Government, their monthly allowance for rent is fixed at 850 a month.
As however these officers reside close to the Gaol, a slightly lower rate of rent allowance should suffice for officers who can reside in the suburbs of the City.

ANDREW BONAR LAW, M.P.,
