5. Training

The Courses of Instruction consisted of Squad & Company drill,

Musketry exercises, Bayonet fighting, skirmishing and outposts. In May the number of parades was reduced to one per week, with

A Course of monthly field days in addition beginning in November. lepotures was given by the Inspecting Officer, Capt.A.Riddell, to the Artillery Battery and Infantry units. Route marches have been held

from time to time.

Gun Practice.

It has not been possible to carry out any gun practics during the year but arrangements are being made for practios with the two 10 pdr. guns on 30. 4. 16.

Artillery Battery

Two officers and 48 N.0.0's and men drawn from the Artillery Batty. and other units have trained with six inch guns at Belchers Fort. This Section fired a sub-calibre practice on 19.3.16 and with full charge on 26.3.16, the results of which were satisfactory. The remainder of the Artillery Battery have been trained with the

10 pare. and have made good progress.

Engineer Company

This Company has continued to provide an average of two officers and 36′′ men nightly on the Defence Electric Lights at Belohers Fort, Lyaemun and Stonecutters, and are deserving of great credit for the oheerful carrying out of their arduous duties. Many of the men work in the looal Dockyards where the hours are from 7 a.m.to 5 p.m.; an addition of 6 hours night duty one night in four is therefore &

considerable strain.

Centre & Left Sections M.G.Co. & Scouts Company.

Preliminary These units have been trained with the Maxim Guns. training was carried out with Machine gun and Landscape targets but, on account of the necessity for economy in expenditure of ammunition only the first four practices of Table "C" have been fired by a few men for purposes of demonstration. It is hoped that sufficient ammunition will be available shortly for the rajority of the men

to fire the first four practices of Table "C" at least.
