As regards drill, the ern are drilled by members of the
Reserve in company and platoon drill and mannual exercises, but no
bayonets are supplied. It takes a considerable time for the
Chinese to learn the elements of drill but when they have grasped them they become as good as any of the other units. Drill competi-
tions are held between the various platoone which help to a very con- siderable extent in smartening up the

As all the anh come under the Peace Preservation Ordinance
they can be taken before a Magistrate for breaches of discipline, but so far no necessity has arisen for such a course. About 4 men have been dismissed; extra drills, extra duties have been found
sufficient to meet the cases that have arisen, The Chinese, as
regards discipline, are the most conscientious.
All, services are entirely voluntary. With the exception of uniform for the Chinese and equipment for the Chinese Ambulance Corps, uniform, arms and ammunition are supplied by the Government. Certain Chinese gentlemen have paid for the uniform for the Chinese and the ambulance corps equipment. The motor bicycles are owned by their arter riders, and the ponies for the mounted section and their gear have been presented by members of the community.

As regards the Chinese part of the Reserve they now number 220 N.C.Os and P.Cs. The senior officer is Chief Inspector J. M. Wong, and a fully qualified doctor. Doctor Thomas (of Chinese descent) is in charge of the Ambulance Corps under the title of Surgeon Inspector. No. 3 Company is fully organized. It consists of 2 platoons of 2 sections each. Each platoon is under the command of an Inspector and the senior platoon commander also acts as com- pany commander. Each section is under the command of a section commander bearing the rank of Crown Sergeant and consists of 2 Sergeants and 24 constables. No. 4 Company is in course of formation.

The Ambulance Company is not yet fully formed. It is under the command of the Surgeon Inspector. There are 2 Sergeants and 40
