In further reference to our respects of the 9th inst.,
it would appear from our latest cable advices from New York
that our Mr.Sanders' negotiations with the Texas Company have
advanced a stage.
In view however of the mischievous rumour, of which the
Texas Company had warning from Hongkong, our Principals are not
disposed to take any further riske, being unwilling to see their
business made a football of by centending parties.
We are
therefore advised by sable that they require us to send them a
signed statement from Messrs.Reise & Co., setting out the names
of the partners of the firm and the constitution of its capital,
together with assurances that the Government will not stop them from trading in Hongkong for reasons of political expediency because of their German name or origin.
You will readily understand that is the circumstances,
which we have made known to you, such a precaution as that out- lined by the Texas Company is essential for the proper contimance of its business, if it is to be carried on from Hongkong and by
