The Chairman of the Hongkong Chamber of Commerce

has been engaged for the last 27 years in the export of Brit- ish goods to China and other markets, and that we are and al- ways have been perfectly independent of any German firm.

That we have dealt with German firms, is, we beg to remind you, no more discreditable than the fact of the bloedi relationship between the Bourts of St. James' and Berlin.

i

Since the outbreak of the war, we have worked pat- iently and unremittingly, to the neglect of our own intereste to safeguard those of our British manufacturers whose goods | had been ordered for shipment to China, and having disposed of that difficulty, wehave, with the unhesitating assistance: of the Board of Trade, succeeded in opening fresh connections in Hongkong as well as in the principal treaty ports of Chine|

Our status is so well known to the Foreigh ofride the Colonial Office, the Home Office, and the Board of Trade, and to .B.K. Consuls abroad, that we feel there should be no need to elaborate the fact in writing to the Hongkong Chamber of Commerce.

We do however challenge you to substantiate the remark that we "do not seem to realise the situation, etc", and to produce any letters from us which can possible convey any such impression.
