progressive Japanese firm. A priceless opportunity for the

commercial penetration of China is thus lost to British traders.

The appointment of Messrs.Reiss & Co. as local advisers

to Mr.Humphrey Cheethan was, as you may recollect, virtually

forced upon us.

Neither the status of the appointment however, nor its remuneration appear to be satisfactory to Mesars. Reise & Co., who desire that our agency should be definitely entrusted to their firm, with a larger share of the profits of the business.

As we are not at present in a position to open establishmenta of our own in Hongkong and in Canton, we have, in principle,

expressed our acceptance of Messrs.Reiss & Co's demand, provided

the position of Mr.Cheetham as Sales Manager for the Kerosene &c.

be satisfactorily arranged, and subject, of course, to the agree- ment of our principals, the Texas Company of New York.

Our Mr.Sanders, who has been in New York since the middle

of October on our Company's business, has been in constant touch

with the Texas Company, and is awaiting a propitious moment to

put forward and press Messrs. Reise & Co's offer of services.

For this, however, he will have to exercise the utmost dis-

cretion, coupled with the greatest persuasiveness, because

unfortunately the attitude of the Texas Company towards British

firms in general is highly prejudiced by the inactivity of
