blessings of a Christian God for all his actions.

During these months my thoughts have, strange to say, wandered back to the time when you and I in the heathen temples of our good old Chinese friends poked fun (in the light-heartedness of youth) at their multifarious gods-at their ferocious God of War. I have reflected and wondered......just wondered! The pastors keep silent- no one supplies the answer to the obvious question.

X.... states that his pseudo-American had ex- pressed doubts as to my sanity. I do not return the compliment. In face of his amazing views, I can only say that the lengths to which the Germans carry their unity-body and soul-seem to me extraordinary. In patriotic submission to the national cause, they seem blindly to sacrifice individual thought and to believe only what their Government wishes them to believe for the time being.

We thus arrive, by simple evolution, at the equally remarkable blind hatred of England; to dispel which is all the more difficult because, having rigorously ex- cluded from their minds all views of others which run counter to their own, most Germans honestly believe themselves to be right and indignantly refuse all reason- ing of others.

This remarkable hypnotic trance of a whole nation is of course an asset of immense value to the astute Berlin mesmerists!

As I do not know X....'s present address, please let him have this letter. Meanwhile, I hope he will not thirst for my blood.

We heard from health and quite happy."
