We are to-day telegraphing to Messrs. Johnson Stokes

& Master asking them to approach the firm we have referred to

above, on certain matters which their partner is desirous of

knowing, and if possible to arrange the matter with his firm

on our terme, or alternatively to make a stringent agreement,

on our behalf, with Messrs, Shewan Tomes & Co. "as a temporary

arrangement for the Canton portion of the coming shipment",

in accordance with their (Messrs. Johnson Stokes & Master's)

cable-proposal to us of the lóth inst., a copy of which cable

we passed on to you in our letter of the same date. Ke 8879.

Shewan Tomes & Co. must of course bind themselvee not to

divert the business from us to themselves.

As to your paragraph No.2, our Mr.Carroll will have

pleasure in waiting upon you with the two Agreements which you

mention; - and as to your No.3, we shall of course be pleased to provide

Vyou with the joint statutory declaration of the directors,

much as we deprecate its being required of us. Having been

busy almost all day yesterday and the best part of this morn- ing with the gentleman from Hongkong, we must ask your kind indulgence for our not having made this declaration to-day.

Mr. Carroll and the writer hereby undertake to make such

declaration in the terms of your letter and forthwith to instruct the Company's solicitors accordingly.
