We have to acknowledge receipt of your favour dated
the 19th inst., received yesterday, and are very much obliged
for the information contained therein.
As to what you write in the first paragraph of your
letter, part of the cargo will be landed in a day or two at
Whampoa (the port of discharge of Canton for all larger
vessels), and this practice has been followed for years, not
(as your information indicates) because of a lack of storage
accomodation at Hongkong, but solely because it enables us to
distribute the oil from Canton to the various places on the
Pearl and West Rivers, which is cheaper than landing the whole
cargo at Hongkong and making these distributions from there.
As to the godown in Canton (or strictly speaking in
Fati near Canton), it is rented by the Texas Company which
pays the rent. True, the lease itself has nominally
drawn in the name of the Chartered Bank of India Australia &
