His Excellency the Governor of Hongkong.
Your Excellency will thus understand how necessary it was
for us to receive an early answer and will absolve us from any lack of patience and tact if, fearing that we should fail to convey to Your Excellency, in the restricted language of a cable, the extreme urgency of the matter, we once more approached the Colonial Office by letter, of which the following is an
tract:
ex -
"We are of course aware that this matter must follow the usual administrative course. Nearly three weeks have passed, however, and the matter appears to us so exceedingly simple that we are afraid that we may not have expressed our- selves with sufficient clearness in regard to the great urgency of the matter.
-
If you will be good enough to refer to page 3 of our letter to Hongkong of the 2nd instant copy of which we sent you on the same day, you will find therein the reasons which make it so necessary that this matter should be decided immediately, in order that this desirable business should not go to American competitors of ours, and thus be lost to us and the London financial market.
Perhaps you will be good enough to explain by cable the urgency of the matter and, should you require further particulars for that purpose, we will have much pleasure in waiting upon you again."
It may interest Your Excellency to learn that in the month of December more than 50,000 cases of Texas Oil were sold by the Liquidators of Messrs. Reuter Brockelmann & Co.
We have the honour to be
Your Excellency's
obedient servants
