cabled you on the 5th instant:

and have to thank you for your prompt reply, on the following day:
"Your instructions are having every attention.
Present stock amounts to: 73,500 (cases)"
We should add that, with the consent of H.E. the
Governor, we have since arranged with Mr.Humphrey Cheetham, at present in Shanghai, to enter our employ as Agent for us and the Texas Company, whose Sole Agency we hold, as you are aware.

Our contract with Mr.Cheetham contains full authority (which authority he will of course produce to you), as to ob-
taining from you all books, papere, &c. &c., or copies of them
which he may require for the proper handling of this business. You may perhaps consider that your parting with such books, papers &c., or allowing copies to be taken, conflicts with your duties
as Liquidatore as long as you have still our unsold stock under
