Arising from the operation of the Alien Enemies (Winding up) Ordinance, 1914, issued by His Excellency the Governor of Hong Kong, we would ask your favorable consideration of the matter set forth
below. -
We may explain that we are Piece Goods Merchants, and have been engaged in the export trade to China for over half a century. In common with other shippers who have not their own branch in Hong Kong, we have done part business with English Houses there, but the great bulk of our trade has always been with Alien firms, because they, more 80 than the English houses, have specially cultivated Fancy Piece Goods in which we are primarily concerned.
As illustrating the value and importance of our trade with Enemy firms in Hong Kong, our shipments in the year preceding the outbreak of war, i.e. 1913 reached £40,000/150,000.
This trade has been gradually built up mainly by our efforts. Sometimes to introduce a new cloth we have sent out the first shipment
on our own account, or made a special allowance in price; in other cases we have at considerable trouble and expense sampled to meet the oversea fequirements.
