suggested that they should get into communication with the Colonial Secretary in Hong Kong. The following cable was accordingly sent on November 14th 1914: -

"Hear German Firms being compulsorily closed down

does this apply Gaupp & Co. Do you recommend our sending out representative on behalf of English Creditors".

On November 24th 1914 the following reply was received: "Do not make any arrangements wait until you hear from us

with reference to agency".

On the 27th November 1914 Messrs Lowe, Bingham & Matthews wrote confirming the above cable.

The following paragraph appears in their letter (received January 6th 1915)

"We have received permission of the resident partner who is a prisoner of war in camp at this port, also

from the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation who

have financed the firm, to sell the business as a going

concern. We are advertising to this effect and anticipate

that we shall be successful in disposing of the business

in which case it appears that all creditors will be paid in full”

On the 30th November Mappin & Webb wrote the Colonial Secretary at Hong Kong confirming their cablegram and sent a copy
