Dear Ladan,

197

Downing Street,

23rd August, 1915.

1 have received your letter of the 16th August, and in reply 1 regret to say that i am unable to grant you the interview which you seek. As you will no doubt understand it is quite impossible for tum

Secretary of State personally to see candidates for appointments in the Colonial service, or their wives, as it would entail far toe great a call upon his time. No doubt, however, your husband's claims and qualifion- tions will be sarefully considered by the Governor when he subaits his recommendations for the appointuent of Attorney General of Hong Kong. If he puts forward the name of kr. Alabaster, the recommendation will of course have all dus weight, but in the ouse of high legal posta the names of officers already in the Colonial service bave also to be considered by the Secretary of State.

Tours truly,

TD ABonar Low

ALABASTER.
