London Chamber of Commerce,
Dear Sir,
London, B.0.
It has come to the knowledge of my Committee that
German
of Messrs. Wm. Meyerink & Co.,
the old established/firm
at Shanghai has been sold to a Chinese gyndeoate the principal
of which is the former Compradore of the firm,
The Syndicate has taken over the entire business
including the German staff and is advising suppliers in
Manchester and elsewhere that all outstanding contracts have
been tranferred from the Messrs. Meyerink. It is also under-
stood that credits have been opened through Dutch Banks to
enable the goods to be financed.
firms in
Although no particulars regarding other German
Shanghai are to hand it is believed that many are
employing similar methods and in some cases nominal heads
of American or other neutral nationality have been appointed
with the in-tention of providing a means whereby Bri ti sh
suppliers may, if they wish, evade the letter of the recent
proclamation against Trading with the Ehery.
The British Merchants of this Colony supported by
my Committee cannot too strongly protest agaist such pro-
ceedings and would urge you to take such steps as will in-
fluence the Government to refise to recognise these transfers.
I am, dear sir,
Yours faithfully,
(nd)
Acting Secretary.
