GERMAN METHODS IN SHANGHAI.

------

STARTLING KAPUSURI,

Attempt to ship arms and ammunition to india.

Proceedings in the xized Court.

MATA V AMA AR

There were sensational proceedings in the Kixed Court this

morning, when three chinese citizens were charged with having in their

possession 130 pistols and 20,000 rounds of womunition, A brief

statement of the evidence to be adduced at the trial went to show

that the arms in question were destined for India, and also that they

were to be taken there by a thinama: in the pay of a local Gernan.

The arms in question so far as can be learnt, were to be shipped on

a British or neutral boat na "Kedicine", and an exceedingly peculiar

device had been planned for their conrayw:00, They were contained

in small fist tins about a foot in length, six inches wide and an

inch thick, and, to prevent suspicion, the tins were concealed

between two wooden planks soroved tightly together as if in one

pione, The gae via evidently given away by a curious Chinese

sarpenter, who, being engaged on what be considered an unusual piece

of work, happened to open one of the tine and, to his great surprise,

found, instead of medicine, pistols and ammunition.

The Punicipal volies took their first step in the matter on

Baturday afternoon, when they arrested two wheelbarrow coolies in

possession of some of the planka, and u few further enquiries brought

to light the whele German sel.ame, which, we are thankful to say, was

"nipped in the bud", KP. A. Fielsen, of lasera. Garrels, Dorner and

Co., a German firm which had until recently represented a London insurance company, was one of the culprits, and the German Mixed Court Assessor immediately took steps to have the duse tried by

himself
