been in the islands, the Turkish Authorities had been looking into his record, with the result that they had about reached the decision that he was a faker of the worst sort when there came in from Zamboanga a prominent Turk who told of having lost a lot of jewelry while Mahmud was staying with him, and who asked that some steps be taken towards recovering the missing property, This was last week.
Learning that his Zamboanga aoquaintance was in town, and suspecting the cause of his visit, Mahmud resolved on a get away, and accordingly stowed away on the Transport *Warren"
leaving for Olongapo. Hard luck pursued him. On the way to
the Naval Station, Mahmud fell into a coal bunker and
suffered a broken shoulder. At Olongapo he was put in
hospital and the authorities there asked Mr. Hashim by wire,
as one of the representative Turks here, as to what should be
done with the patient, who was without funds.
In the meantime information had been lodged with
the prosecuting Attorney by Mr. Kashim, and a warrant for
Kehmud's arrest was made out and sent to Olongapo, the
fugitive having been brought back to Manila on Saturday.
He has confessed to travelling under a false name, but claims
that the money he collected went into the Turkish Navy fund.
"From all that we can learn", said Mr. Hashim to-day
"This person has been begging money from people in all parts
of the islands ever since he game here from the China coast
on the "Mongolia" three months ago. He collected a lot of
money on the China Coast, and we believe he took in from
five to six thousands pesos here.
