3. Sir J. WALTON asked why German mercantile houses in Hong Kong have been treated by His Majesty's Govern- ment, not as if they were enemies, but as if they were friends to be quietly pro- tected as far as possible against the logical consequences of the War; and whether they have been allowed to make arrangements to tarry on business through Chinese or other friends so that after the War they may resume mercan- tile and other activities with as little loss and disturbance as possible in com. petition with British traders?
Mr. STEEL-MAITLAND: I do not know the ground on which the statements made in this question are based. Enemy firms in our Colonies are dealt with on similar principles to those applied to them in the United Kingdom. Liquidators have been appointed by the Government of Hong Kong to wind up enemy firms in the Colony.
Sir J. WALTON: Is my hon. Friend aware that when they are on the spot interned German traders have opportuni- ties of continuing their business through Chinese or other agents, which defeats the purpose the Government have in view?
Mr. STEEL-MAITLAND: 1 am quite aware of the exact point which the hon. Member wishes to convey, and I think, perhaps, this is the information he would like which is that those firms in Hong Kong are not continuing business, whether under their old German prin- ciples or any other controllers, but are as a matter of fact being liquidated and wound up.
