re Hongkong business.

Since writing you last on the 16th inst., in regard to the above, we received your telegram on the 19th:

"Shall we charter and ship consigned to yourselves at Hongkong Whampoa steamer of about hundred sixty thousand cases Scale baand Kerosene, loading Port Arthur April”

to which we replied the same day:

"Yes, charter Hongkong option Whampoa, April loading,

or sooner as opportunity offers stop. Governor Hongkong just cabled agreement our proposals."

and a day or two later the writer was pleased to receive your

dated 11th inst. Kr. Knight's private lines, dealing with the same matter and which letter he therefore begs to acknowledge on this occasion. We note therefrom that you agree to carry on with us the oil business in South China, through our representative there.

Your above cable arrived almost at the same time as one from the Governor of Hongkong, by which he agreed to our formal proposal (made at the suggestion of our Colonial Office which h had
