The Foreign Office acknowledges with thanks the receipt of the Note Verbale of the 13th ultimo FO. No. 6223- with regard to the position of German prisoners in Hongkong and wishes at the same time to communicate the following to the U.S.Embassy.
The German Govt. noticed from the above -mentioned
note verbale that the question of the maintenance is, not without reason, the cause of many complaints from the interned persons. The German Government has re- ceived this same information from other reliable sources.
The Foreign Office would be very grateful to the Embassy if they would ask the American Consul General at Hongkong to give this matter his particular atten- tion and to press for a satisfactory solution.
The German Govt. has also received information
that one of the interned persons at hongkong has been sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment for attempt-
ing to escape. In accordance with the stipulations
of Art. 8 of the Hague Land War Regulations (Landkrieg-
Bordnung) a communication is desired as to whether the
news of the sentence of one of the interned persons to
eighteen months imprisonment is true, who is thus sen-
tenced and whether the punishment is the consequence
of an attempted escape only, or of other acts as well,-
and in the latter case what the other acts were.
Finally the German Govt has reliable information
that in consequence of this attempted escape, the
