With reference to your telegram No. 1536 of the 13th instant, respecting the reported intention of a Norwegian firm, Messrs. Olsen, to establish a service between Seattle and Japan, I have the honour to transmit to you herewith copy of a despatch which I have received from the Acting British Consul at Portland, Oregon, stating that he has been unable to obtain any confirma tion of the report.

The information given by Mr. Trant is confirmed by His Majesty's Consul-General at San Francisco, who states that, mile the Olsen Company's vessels are at present running between that port and Scandinavia, no information is obtainable locally as to any proposed change of route. The prospects of the establishment of a Dutch steamship service between San Francisco and Java via Japan were mentioned in my telegram No. 2222 of the 22nd instant.

Right Honourable

I have the honour to be,

With the highest respect,

sir,

Your most obedient,

humble Servant,
