I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to
enclose herewith for the information of the
Secretary of State for the Colonies, a copy of a
letter with enclosures addressed by Becker,
Shillan and Company of London to the War Trade
Department, and referred by that Department to
this Office, regarding the China branches of
the American firm of Getz Brothers and Company.
The Shanghai branch of his firm is at present
on the China Black List in consequence of a report
received some months ago from His Majesty's Minister
at Peking to the effect that this brauch was
"absolutely suspect" as regards exports from China.
In view of the enclosed communication, Sir
E. Grey is disposed to invite a further report from Sir J. Jordan on the position of this firm. Before taking any action in the matter, however, Sir E. Grey would be glad to learn Low the Hongkong branch of the firm is regarded by the Colonial authorities.
Should there be no information on the subject in the possession of your Department, Sir E. Grey would be prepared, in order to avoid unnecessary telegraphing, to instruct Sir J. Jordan to communi- cate direct with the authorities at Hongkong on
