About one month ago there arrived in the port of
liong Kong 48 bales of French Lichelin automobile tyres consigned to the undersigned, These tyres were shipped by the Michelin Tyre Company of Clermont-Ferrand, France, through the port of Larseilles, France,to a French house
in the Phillippines.
His Excellency,
According to information which we receive from the
British Consulate of this City these tyres were held up in Hong Kong as contraband of war.
We therefore furnished the British Consul, through the French Consul, all information concerning this ship-
ment to us, and the i..voices.
Having heard nothing further as a result of this ac- tion, we wish to call the attention of Your Excellency to the situation and at the same time express our great surprise that the government of Hong Kong, would hold up a shipment of this character, shipped by a French firm, through a French port without difficulty, to another French House in a neutral port.
The fact that we are in great need of these tyres moves us to place this matter before your Excellency. We would also explain to you that our automobile business
is the largest in the Far East and in volume exceeds
that of most other establishments in other lines in the Phillippines. We have sold approximately 2.000 pleasure cars and trucks and the owners look to us for tyres, par- ticularly michelin of French manufacture.
Sir Francis fienry May K,C_N_G, Governor of Hong Kong,
