consignments by the sub-agents because in this way I had
the choice of (1), repaying the money to the agents against the sureties, or (2) holding it for us for the present and ultimately remitting it direct to the Texas, or (3) to hand it over to Sh. T. and Co. Further, I wanted to have this money in order to pay out of it Canton's Commission on the consignment Liddesdale No. 2 as well as on the last consignment, and so to cover in all some $5000 for the Liquidators would not have paid us this. I will consider what I shall now do with this money and I am entirely of your opinion that least of all it is desirable to hand this money over to the Liquidators in spite of the fact that they are bothering us practically every day for this payment.
I enclose a copy of a letter from the Commercial Union Assurance Company and my reply. I am of the opinion that this enquiry by Testers is conected with the recent stricter ordinances and we should certainly duly recognise the fact that the C. U. have still left us the agency espec- ially when one has regard to the fact that relations here today are very unsatisfactory. Tester in this respect will have a difficult position in Hongkong with his country- nien. I have not yet received a reply to my letter.
