refused to do so. He did not however issue

the circular to which he had referred.

6. Mr. Wilkinson of Messrs. Wilkinson & Grist,

the Hongkong firm of solicitors, has been writing

to Mr. Hogg, apparently at the instance of Mr.

Holyoak, urging on what he considers legal grounds

the expulsion of the Germans from the Canton Club.

The Club Committee have, I believe, had the good

sense to decline to act on this advice, realizing

as they do that a refusal on the part of the Germans

to leave the Club would result either in a dis-

turbance or in a serious loss of face for the

British members.
