I don't know. I have sounded the Agents of the
several companies here but can get no satisfaction
out of them, they all however seem to think that it
would be impossible to keep these Alien enemies off
the ship but in my opinion I consider that a
Shipmaster can order any undesirable person off his
ship. It is reported that up North one Shipmaster
informed the Commissioner of Customs at the port
at which he was at the time, that unless the German
Customs Officer who was on duty on board his ship
was immediately removed he would be put in irons,
and he was at once removed.
I can however not
vouch for that as it is only hearsay.
Never-
theless the relations are very strained, and these
allen enemies could do an immense amount of damage
to ships' property, or gear and never be found out.
I wrote to the local press some time back, and for
a few days here Britishers or Neutrals were sent on
British steamers, but they soon went back to sending
alien enemies on board again. I can quite under-
