Dear Alston,
Many thanks for copies of telegrams which are
distinctly instructive.
I take it that the export, and piece goods import
(ie. Vanchester) trade has been carried on at a loss
on purpose, and that the transactions are not merely unfortu
nate mercantile transactions which have been entered into
in the hope of making profits.
If this is so, it would explain the phrase "it is how-
ever curious" which no doubt means it is odd or strange.

large one, and 20 % Commission to an Agent is not an ordinary
trading commission. We have heard of Germans working for
less than English firms, but the latter would be glad to take
much less in this ca88,
The Germans in Hong Kong sell piece goods on credit,
and if they have continuously made contracte for English
goods at a loss, and in addition have taken the risk of being:
