GERMAN COFPETITION.
A remarkable and most significant fact in connection
with German Trade in Hongkong is said to have come out in
connection with the liquidations there by British firms of

the German houses.
I say said to have come out, because
what I am about to tell you is merely based upon general
report current in Hongkong.
These reports are, however,
of such a common nature, and upon the lips of everybody
actually liquidating German houses, that there is little
doubt they are true. The Government, at any rate, are in
a position to ascertain actual facts from their records
furnished by the liquidators, if the point is enquired into.
Since the commencement of the liquidations it has been
discovered that a German State-aided Financial Trust was at
the back of certain prominent German houses, the existence
of which was for the sole purpose of ousting commerce from
