With reference to our letter of the 12th.

of February 1914, I have the honour to enclose, for

the information of the Secretary of State, the annual

valuations of the securities held against the note

issues of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation

and the Chartered Bank of India, Australia, and China,

respectively, at the beginning of the year 1915.

2. The valuations show, in the case of the

Chartered Bank an excess of security over the amount

required to the extent of £52,040.9.5, and as regards

the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation a

deficiency of £388,423.5.3.

3. It will be observed that the position in the

case of each valuation is more favourable than at the

beginning of the year 1914,

4. I enclose copies of letters from the Banks

as to the notes in circulation in the Straits Settlements

on the 31st. of December 1914.
