Sir,

I have the honour to state that the following

appeared in "The West Coast Leader" dated 31st October

1914, published in Lima, Peru :-

"Mr Lyman J. Mowry, representative in Mexico of the

Eng Hok Fong Steamship Company, of Hong Kong, was a visitor in Lima during the past week, having arrived at Callao on board the "Mexico City", from Portland, Ore. Mr Nowry visited the West Coast to look over the business situation and left by the "Mexico City" to-day. The German Steamer "Marie" now in Callao, and which served as a coaling ship of the "Leipzig" was originally chartered by the Eng Hok Fong Company to take a cargo of coal from China to Mexico, and was on her way with this cargo when war broke out. A few days before she was due to arrive at port, Mr Mowry received a cable from the Company's main office in Hong Zong stating that the German Government had purchased, and paid for the entire cargo. Later it developed that this cargo was transhipped to the "Leipzig" on the high

With reference to the above, I have the honour

to point out that the Eng Hok Fong Steamship Company is

given as "of Hong Kong" and that the Managing Owner's

address is given in Lloyd's Register as Hong Kong. The

German Steamer "Marie" was in company with the "Leipzig"

for some time, and was one of the two colliers at

Gallapagos Islands on 23rd September with that cruiser.

In addition tothe cargo of coal referred to above, the

"Marie' also received a cargo of coal ex S.3. "Mazatlan'

at Guaymas and this coal was also delivered to "Leipzig"

The "lagatlan" was originally a German Steamer (name not

known) and transferred since the war to Mexican owners.

The "Marie" was subsequently interned by the Feruvian

Authorities on arriving at Callao with the crew of the
