H.B.M.Consulate-General,

Canton, December 16th., 1916.

663

Sir,

With reference to Your Excellency's letter No. 145

of the 9th. instut, I have the nonour to state that Mr. Volpicelli arrived here on the evening of the 8th, and is at present staying at the Victoria Hotel on the Shameen. Telegrams were exchanged

between him and Mr. Bene and the latter arrived at Canton on the

morning of the 10th. with a considerable amount of heavy luggage

which r. Bena did not take back on his return to Hongkong the

some evening.

Mr. Volpicelli has been in frequent intercourse

with a native photographer, Lau Fong, and yesterday afternoon he

was at the German Consulate from 3.15 to 4.40.

I understand that official mail matter is being

addressed direct to Mr. Volpicelli at Cmton through the Chinese

Post Office but I have at present no information that he intends

to trmafer the Italian Consulate-General to Canton. It is

possible that Lau Fong may be assisting him to rent a house in the

City for this purpose and I am making inquiries on this subject

and shall not fail to acquaint you with the result.

I have etc.,

(sd.) ■. C. Wilton,

Acting Consul-General.

His Excellency

Sir Henry May, K.C.M.C.,

Governor and Commander-in-Chief,
