helping the Government I would have surely met the same fate as the late Mr. Hopkinson i.e. to be shot down by one of these fanatics. Of course I have been extremely careful about my rondering help to the Government. Now air, to suspect such a man as a disloyal person should sound very strange to me. For my conscience is clear and I

know fully well as you can clearly see from the above statement that

I am a thoroughly loyal subject of His Majesty the King-Emperor.

Having enjoyed the benefits of the British rule in India, I would be

an ungrateful person against the British Race, if I do not help the

Government when it needs.

Even now as I return back to India it is not only my fer-

vent desire but I feel it is my duty that I should help the Govern-

ment at this supreme hour. I feel confident as Mrs. F. C. Hopkinson

points out in her letter of reference to me that my service will be

of no li

lue to the Goverment. littlevalue

In connection with this I wish

to draw your attention to the fact that my name has been registered

for an Inspector of Police in the Madras Police Department, I am

going to enter right away into the British Goverment service as soon

as I reach India.

I come from very influential and a respectable Christiai

family, from Madras. And it is exactly why those seditious mongers

thought that they could convert me into their ways of thinking and

acting. But they did not and cannot succeed even if they try for

generation after generation to convert my family into their rotten

ways. So long as I remained in America I had no confidence in any

Hindu and I did not tell any one of these what I have been doing and

which my plans are. For I know fully well what I have been doing

secretly in keeping the Government. Not even this man who is with

me now knows anything of the papers I have with me.

In conclusion I wish to solemnly declare that I am thorough

ly loyal subject of His Majesty the Emperor and I mean to put my

service into the Goverment. I am afraid that I have already tired

your patience by my long statement but you can clearly see my case

I request you to be kind enough to set me free and be sent home without any unnecessary delay as I am already put to lots of

now.
