as to release on various grounds. Each case was taken up with the authorities later and where any merit was found in the claim invasti- -gation and redress if necessary more promised.

While the camp authorities are not always able to view things from the same standpoint as the prisoners the general spirit among the British officers in charge of the men here is one of consideration and helpfulness. The men as a whole gave every evidence and indeed actual personal assurance that they were very much better satisfied with their life there than they were at the time of the former inspection of the comp when things were yet more or less in the course

of arrangement.

I have no suggestions to offer ne to any changes in Camp arrangements or in the care of the prisoners with the possible exception of a little more leeway in the arrangement as to their

rations.

I would be plensed if the Department could assure the Imperial Government at Berlin that the care of these prisoners and of their personal and business interests receives the constant attention of this Consulate-General. I am in touch with the camp all the time and any unfavourable condition or untoward circumstance will

receive imediate attention.
